Coffee Date With Hard of Hearing Young Adults

On March 25, CHHA-BC hosted a coffee date for hard of hearing young adults at Waves Coffee House in New Westminster. The event was organized to meet hard of hearing young people and create an inclusive platform to promote social interactions and new friendships. It brought six youths together to share the springtime splendour with positive vibes, and each were served hot beverages and scrumptious treats of their choice during the discussion. The ideas of hard of hearing young adults serve as valuable input for designing future activities and projects in the Youth Peer Support Program. To this end, the group was encouraged to share their ideas for new events in the upcoming year. They were very happy to provide insightful and innovative ideas to make the YPSP activities sustainable. Next, the floor was open to sharing the daily challenges faced as hard of hearing individuals. Several of the challenges mentioned included communication with people who speak with accents, poor access to American Sign Language interpretation during community events, and restaurants and workplaces with very loud background noise. Nevertheless, they were happy that hearing technology has advanced to meet many of their needs at present. One proposed idea was to have some restaurants designed specifically for the disabled community. The group plans to meet again in May. |
