About CHHA

The Canadian Hard of Hearing Association, British Columbia Chapter is a consumer-based organization dedicated to enhancing the quality of life of persons with hearing loss. We work with persons with hearing loss, their support networks, healthcare professionals and other partners to decrease isolation and remove barriers to their full participation in society.

We believe that all persons with hearing loss should have access to an environment free from stigma, discrimination and obstacles to their full participation in society.

  • Education: we educate the general public, social institutions, professionals and hard of hearing people themselves, about hearing related challenges and available solutions.
  • Self-empowerment: we support hard of hearing persons to take individual and collective responsibility for their own growth and development.
  • Advocacy: we explore problems and foster the study of solutions to them.
  • Accessibility: we promote the development of, and the accessibility to, technical aids and other services and facilities for hard of hearing people.

Goals

Accessibility

  • Promote the interests of persons who are hard of hearing in the Provincial Government’s Accessibility Legislation with reference to the development of standards.
  • Foster an awareness of the needs of persons with hearing loss in the Government’s rollout of COVID-19 measures, and share information with our members in the face of use of covered masks and social distancing restrictions.
  • Encourage the provision of information about technologies and strategies that promote accessibility.

Advocacy

  • Promote the interests of persons who are hard of hearing in the Provincial Government’s Accessibility Legislation with reference to the development of standards.
  • Promote the provision of captioning within the Medical Interpreting Services Program as a funded option.

Education 

  • Raise awareness in the community of hearing loss issues.
  • Educate and inform our members of developments such as with respect to COVID-19 access issues.
  • Provide on-going educational programs with partners such as CHHA Vancouver.
  • Educate consumers and health professions about access needs of persons with hearing loss in the health care sector.

Self-empowerment

  • Share information with persons with hearing loss to enhance communication and lessen the stress of a hospital stay and healthcare visit for persons (e.g. Hearing Access to Health Kit on the website).
  • Emphasize through our communications and educational programs.

Representation

  • Represent hard of hearing persons as required, e.g. CHHA National; the Council of Service Providers of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing in the Lower Mainland.
  • Maintain liaison with the Seniors Advocate of the Province of British Columbia.

Finance and Operations 

  • Manage our fundraising program to create financial stability.
  • Complete the transition to new computer and systems tools for the financial management and administration of the organization.
  • Adopt enhanced social media approaches to communication with members.
  • Provide oversight for the CHHA-BC Youth Peer Support Program.

We are governed by a Board of Directors who work with a team of staff and volunteers to serve our members and the general public.

CHHA – History

We were formed as a charitable non-profit organization December 1, 1986 and became a registered Society in British Columbia in May 1996.
